What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is emerging as one of the most widespread and costly health issues in the U.S. OSA is known to affect more than 18 million Americans, including men, women and children - 85% of whom are undiagnosed.1, 2 The disease is characterized by upper airway obstruction, associated with repeated gaps in breathing and interrupted sleep. People with obstructive sleep apnea are at serious risk of the below medical problems and accidents:

  • Stroke3
  • Heart Attack4
  • Obesity5
  • Diabetes6
  • Motor Vehicle Accidents7

OSA can be hereditary11 and up to 10% of children have obstructive sleep apnea8. Studies show that children with sleep breathing disorders can suffer from behavioral problems and lower IQ scores9, 10.

Why are orthodontists treating sleep apnea in their practices? Sleep physicians and industry leaders share about the importance of orthodontists offering sleep treatment and why Orthodontists are an important part of the sleep referral team. Watch this video to learn more…
